What French Curl Braids Are

The curl is in the hair, not in your routine

A French curl braid is a knotless braid finished with curled hair. The braider takes your own hair at the root, feeds in the extension the way she would for any knotless install, and stops braiding partway down. From that point the hair is left loose — and because the hair she fed in is pre‑curled, what hangs below the braid is a soft spiral that was already there before she started.

That is the whole trick, and it is why the style behaves the way it does. Nothing is curled with heat and nothing is set on rods. The curl is manufactured into the fibre, so it does not fall out overnight the way a heat curl does, and you are not re‑doing it every morning. You wake up, shake it out, and it looks like it did when you left.

People mix this up with boho knotless constantly, and the difference is simple: boho leaves loose straight or wavy strands scattered along the braid for a lived‑in look, while French curl leaves a defined spiral, usually from one point down. Boho looks undone on purpose. French curl looks set.

It takes more hair than a plain knotless install, because every braid needs enough curled hair left over to actually read as a curl. That is the main reason the price sits above a standard knotless set — and it is worth asking us how many packs your length needs before you buy any.

French Curl Braids Questions

What are French curl braids?

They are knotless braids finished with pre-curled hair. Your braider starts at the root the same way she would for any knotless install, feeds in the extension, and stops braiding partway down — everything below that point is left loose as a soft spiral. The curl is manufactured into the hair itself, so no heat, rods or setting lotion go anywhere near it.

What is the difference between French curl and boho knotless?

Both are knotless at the root, and that is where the similarity stops. Boho leaves loose straight or wavy strands scattered along the whole braid, for a deliberately undone look. French curl leaves a defined spiral, usually from one point down. Boho reads lived-in; French curl reads set. If you want the curl to be the thing people notice, it is French curl.

How much do French curl braids cost?

From $225 for a large set at shoulder or midback length, up to $385 for small braids at butt length — the full grid is on this page. The hair itself is an add-on: $60 for boho/French curl hair in a natural colour, $70 coloured, on top of the braiding. Call (832) 834‑0324 with the length and size you have in mind and we will give you the full price before you come in, not at the end.

Will the curls drop or go frizzy?

They hold far better than a heat curl, because the pattern is set in the fibre rather than ironed in — it cannot fall out overnight. What does happen over the weeks is that the ends loosen and start to tangle with each other. Sleeping in a satin bonnet or scarf is the single thing that makes the most difference, and a little mousse or curl foam brings the pattern back when it starts to look tired.

How long do French curl braids last?

Six to eight weeks for most people, which is the same window as any knotless style — what ends it is your own hair growing out at the root, not the curl giving up. Come in for a takedown before the roots get tight rather than after; it is kinder to your hairline and it is a shorter appointment.
