What Are Fulani Braids?
A West African style, centuries old
Fulani braids come from the Fula people of West Africa — Senegal, Mali, Nigeria, Guinea — where the style has been worn for generations. The signature is a cornrow running front to back down the centre of the head, cornrows braided along the sides, and beads or cowrie shells threaded through the ends.
They are a protective style. The hair is braided close to the scalp and the lengths are tucked away, so your own hair is left alone for the weeks it stays in. Done at the right tension it does not pull — and tension is the whole job. A Fulani install that hurts has been braided too tight, and that is what causes damage, not the style itself.
You will also see them called tribal braids. Same technique, different name — most people use the two interchangeably, though "Fulani" is the accurate one.
We braid every variation of it: flip over Fulani braids, where the front section is braided back and flipped over to sit on top; Fulani knotless braids, which swap the knotted base for a feed‑in start so there is nothing pulling at the root; and Fulani finished with curls, beads or cowrie shells. Tell us which you want when you book, or bring a photo and we will match it.

Fulani Braids Questions
If yours isn’t here, call (832) 834‑0324
How long do Fulani braids last?
Six to eight weeks. After that, new growth loosens the cornrow parts and the braids start to pull at the root. If you add curls, expect the shorter end of that range — loose curls tangle sooner than sealed ends.
How long does a Fulani appointment take?
Two to three hours for most installs. One of our clients posted her own timing: started at 11:45, out the door by 2:45, including a takedown and a wash and blow dry beforehand.
How much do Fulani braids cost?
From $265 for midback length, $280 to the waist and $300 for butt length. Adding curls is $15 to $20 more. Braiding hair is $16 a pack and boho curl hair $60, or $70 in a colour, if you want us to supply it.
Are Fulani braids and tribal braids the same thing?
In practice, yes — most people use the names interchangeably for the same centre-part-and-cornrow pattern. "Fulani" is the accurate name, after the Fula people of West Africa the style comes from.
Do Fulani braids damage your hair?
Not when they are installed at the right tension. Fulani braids are a protective style — your own hair is tucked away and left alone. Damage comes from braiding too tight or leaving them in too long, which is why we would rather loosen a section than have you sit through an install that hurts.
What are flip over Fulani braids?
The front section is braided backwards and then flipped over to fall forward across the top of the head, so the cornrow pattern reads as a crown rather than a straight centre part. Same price as the classic Fulani — just ask for it when you book.
Can I get Fulani braids with curls?
Yes. We braid the Fulani pattern and finish the lengths with loose curly hair, so you keep the cornrow detail at the front with movement through the ends. It is $15 to $20 more than the classic finish.
